Cheap way out..... remove stock air box, replace with 3 1/2" inlet filter.
I used a Fujita filter for mine.

Has anyone that installed the Fujita intake noticed a power gain? I hear K&N makes one as well, but pricey. I live in Cali and unless it's C.A.R.B. legal then I will have to take it off and replace a CAI with the stock box for smog.

Come on TRD, help us out!!!!! AEM, where are you????:shakehead:

I am running the exact same set up in mine, I have a manual though, I would say that the combination of intake and exhaust made a difference in power, either one alone I couldn't see making any noticeable gain...

Yeah, sounds alot better with the intake / exhaust on.
I love my Magnaflow, nice low deep tone.
The TRD exhaust sounds really good too.

Oh, also if anyone wants to get rid of the goofy handle thing on the stock intake, I found a solution.
Found a 1" nylon plug at Lowe's, in the specialty drawers by the nuts/bolts section.
Fits perfectly in the place of that dumb handle. (See pics above)

Cylon_xD
06-17-2009, 09:48 AM
yeah, I found some kind of plastic plug just laying around on the floor in my house that fit that "handle" hole, I think it may have been packaging from one of my kid's toys we had just opened, you know, the packaging that takes an army to undo? lol! iI'll probably look for that plug from Lowe's, though, since it is black and the one I put in is translucent white plastic...

I was going to get one of those axlebacks from PrecisionMuffler.com they make for the xD, since theirs was a lot cheaper than the TRD ($270 vs. $450), and they used a Magnaflow can... but then I found a TRD listed on Ebay for $219 starting price, and no one else bid on it, so I got it for the $219 plus Free Shipping! And the TRD is pretty polished stainless steel, the precisionmuffler one was not... so, what the hey, I ended up with a really cheap and really shiny TRD axleback instead!

37 I have seen it in person and know the girl who owns the xD. She is from SE So Cal and it is not C.A.R.B. legal but she said she noticed a definite power gain. So those of you who can get away with it she claims its the best out for now.
I was thinking long term and added the supplemental insurance to my ride, so every mod I do has to be TRD or not illegal in Cali.

Yea, I got mine 2 months ago as a "pre-fit" deal with DC SPORTS. I know quite a few guys that work there. I also got a hold of one of the first Killer Glass Radiator hoses. I am a direct dealer for DC SPORTS, Killer Glass, DDM TUNING, Etc. If you guys ever need to check active inventory lists, let me know! I checked with DC Sports on Friday, and it will be May before they are ready to ship out the header and axlebacks. I am the only Megan Racing dealer on the East Coast, and they are currently working on a very nice Catback also. I will give more details as they become available.

for the DIY intake....im guessing from what has been said, a filter can be purchased at autozone. it needs to be 3.5". does that come with all the clamps and piping? or will other parts need to be purchased along with the filter? and is there any kind of adapter or something else to buy.

im wanting to do one this weekend or next. can someone give me a quick rundown of exactly what i would need so i can get it all in one trip to the store?

Since everyone is talking intakes, no need to start a new thread. lol I have a simple/complex question. And I want different opinions on this. Take a stock xD, out of the intakes available for aftermarket WHAT INTAKE WILL GIVE YOU THE BEST PERFORMANCE? Without factoring in the other upgrades.

Thats real debateable. I tried the DIY intake and I didnt like it. Felt like I lost some tq. I now have an Injen cai and its great. Running strong for awhile now. Others swear by the DIY intake. Injen claims 8 hp added I think but idk about all that. Im getting a dyno done tomorrow so ill see where I am with my mods.

I was waiting for that, lmao!!! The way I see it, and this could be close minded, but i have a DIY intake that was on the car when i bought it (spectre) and i dont see where its doing much at all for me. I figure if your spending like 50-60 or less on something like that...how much can you expect it to do?!?! But i will say this...the Injen CAI in BLACK is so sexy that may decide for me from color alone, haha. BUT....I DO WANT TO HEAR A FEW OPINIONS...FOR EXAMPLE IM SURE PEPS ON HERE RUN DIFF. CAI, or SHORT RAMS, ETC. I WANT TO KNOW THE GAINS IN PERFORMANCE PEPS ARE SEEING. And do let me know the results of that dyno.

i think the k&n was too much for what it was. never had a issue with water on my CAI so id imagine the short ram would be easily guarded. for the AEM, youll see the diameter is all the same. on my injen, the diameter where the maf sensor is seated is smaller, so it wont throw codes. im guessing AEM just electronically alters it.

its a good intake. i cut a piece out of the grille cover on that side to get more air to it. once i get the new grille that wont matter. mesh ftw.

my buddy has the dyno graph which i will post once i have it. i was around 125 whp 126 tq. this was my first dyno experience. i went with a group of 3 mini's. they said the dyno was reading low for us all (called it the heart-breaker lol). id hope so since those are stock numbers. unless stock numbers are at the crank and not wheel.

thanks! actually yes i do. my exhaust is def a little louder. actually have had a couple people say my car sounds almost like a v6 or v8. lol. i'll take the compliment. as far as performance goes, i noticed a little extra pep from a stop and even on highway speeds.

and its really cool to be able to hear the air getting sucked in as you accelerate. almost gives off a slight whistle at high rpms. i dig it!!

haven't driven enough to notice any mpg gains. that was my main reason for doing it. the appearance and maybe an extra 1-2 mpgs

Anyone running with a cold air inatke? What do you guys think about that?

---------- Post added at 06:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:50 PM ----------

Whats the diference between a short ram intake and a cold air intake?

XDevolution
09-13-2012, 09:22 PM
I have a custom short ram similar to the hps intake. The difference is the cold air set ups run into the fender and usually the filters sit behind the bumper. Short ram intake sit visable in the engine bay, easier to install, and are better for low to mid range power gains. Cold air intakes due to the longer intake tract offer higher gains because of colder denser air but gains are not felt til higher in the rpm range.

Resolve
09-14-2012, 07:54 AM
as stated^

Short ram filter normally in engine bay and has a short straight or fairly straight tube

Cold air has longer tubing with more bends. and filter is outside of engine bay normally in wheel well getting the cooler air. The other difference is price and maybe a couple of ponies.

xd_kidd
09-14-2012, 03:49 PM
about another 2-3 ponies for another 20-50 bucks worth of tubes... then some time to remove front bumper and back on... to some be worth it and for some.. well i dont think it will make a dif. really

I took the factory air intake off last night and installed this DIY intake filter. It cost about $30 total for the Spectre Filter from Autozone and the 5/16" threaded stud with washers and nuts I bought from home depot. It tool longer to go get the parts than it did to put it on. Very simple. I haven't had a chance to do any driving with it yet other than a couple of blocks to work. I'm only hoping that maybe it will gain a couple of MPGs.

steve see the intake you made, thats how i started with a spectre filter and stock intake tract. if you really want a more noticable difference, the filter should ve been either a knn or like a aem dryflow. and see that rubber pipe with that awkward pole coming out of it right after the maf? you could actually replace it with a 22 degree bend pipe from autozone (located with all the intake parts) it not only looks more official it actually smooths out the airflow because there are no ridges in the pipe. just a suggestion.

Hey, thanks for the advice. I will definitely look into that. It seems like that pipe is 3 1/2" diameter. I think at my local autozone they only had those pipes you're talking about in 3" diameter but I will double check.

if i'm not mistaken there is a rubber adapter that converts the tubing from 3" to 3 1/2"

i did my filter just like you but added the chrome bend pipe xdevolution was speaking of

That looks good! What did you do about the electronic piece or sensor that plugs into the tube before the filter?

The part u connect ur cone filter to is 3.5" your correct but the actual inner diamter of the mass airflow pipe is 2.38" you have to try and get a pipe as close in diameter as the maf pipe. Im running a 3" pipe now but im gonna reduce it to 2.5". Alot of the aftermarket companies do a stepped pipe set up. Theyll do 2.5"-2.38"-2.5". As the pipe diameter. A good intake to look at is the dc sport intake. Thats a great example to look at.

Here's what I have guys. Ripped out the air box and put on a 3 1/2 inch Spectre filter. My buddy made me a mounting bracket real quick coming off the battery. Don't mind all the salt hopefully the cold weather will break and I can clean her up. Let me know what you guys think.:D
