Hell yeah, Ted, start brushing up on your Battlestar Gallactica and Cylon spaceship artistry, I've been wanting to do a Galactica/Cylon Base Star battle scene on mine, but didn't know anyone who could paint good... can ya handle it? If so, it's already on it's way... :worthy:

you'll have to PM me with your going rate... :hands:

The only thing is, the dang xD cover is mostly logo and sculpted grooves, not the best surface for applying a painted image... I have an overwhelming urge to use a grinder and some bondo on the top surface to smooth it out, lol!!

I have no problem doing a Cylon/Battlestar theme. Send me some images to take ideas from, to [email protected].

Rates are simple, $75 or $100, depending on if you want it clear coated as well, plus shipping. Turn around time is about 2 to 3 weeks.

If you want to grind down the logos its up to you, I will paint right over them if you leave them on, or if you want me to highlight them some how I can do that, what ever you want to do is fine by me.

The way it will work is, you ship the cover to me and email any images you want me to replicate, I will do the design out, email you an image of it. If everything looks good, you paypal me and I send it back to you.

Perfect timing too Troy, I am just finishing up my latest work, I'm unhappy with it but the owner is ecstatic, I just need to add some lettering and I am shipping his out, so if you send today I should be ready for it before it even arrives :)

Well Ted, at least you'll have something to keep you busy this weekend, heheh... I take it neither of those covers have the clear coat finish, I'm anxious to see how that will look on mine... but, take your time, don't rush! I want mine to be your masterpiece, LOL! :hands:

Nope neither of them have clear on them. the wolverine one came out... meh, in my opinion. The owner used some type of armor all to clean it with, that soaked into the cover and kept making the paint peel up...

hopefully I wont have to deal with that issue ever again...

Cylon_xD
02-05-2010, 11:25 AM

LOL Troy, no worries, you have already said that you prefer I take my time on it, so I will make sure yours comes out to how I like it... people say that an artist is always too critical of their own work, so maybe you will think my best is the greatest piece of art you have ever seen... hahahahahahaha

Cylon_xD
02-16-2010, 01:26 PM
Ted, I thought you said the clear-coating takes an extra two weeks... unless you have the appointment already lined up for next week, perhaps?

TheLittleDeviant
02-16-2010, 01:55 PM
I talked to the shop again and they said they can clear the cover in 2 days time. Thursday I should have the cover about 80% done, will just need to add the slogan at that point. Next week I will call up the shop, and have them take it for a couple days to clear it, then I will be able to ship out end of next week, beginning of the week after depending on when I get it to them. Next week I should have pictures of the uncleared design though. :D

I am still rooting for "We're Not Just Frakkin Toasters Anymore!"

Cylon_xD
02-16-2010, 07:01 PM
Yeah, after thinking about it more, I do like the dual meaning, with the xB "Toaster" and Cylon "Chrome Toaster" references... Two things - definitely want to change the "They're" from my Sig to "We're" for the cover design, since it is the Cylon that is talking...also, I think it better to spell out Frakking rather than Frakkin' - the Cylons would pronounce human words in a formal robot manner... Frakkin' is what Starbuck would say... :)

Well, kinda talked myself into it... Why don't we go ahead with that... Hmm, It's a much longer slogan, can you fit it all on the cover??

TheLittleDeviant
02-17-2010, 08:30 AM
yea I can just make the "font size" smaller to fit it all. I was thinking of putting it across the bottom of the cover so its the first thing you see.

"We're not just frakking toasters anymore!"

Obj, not down with the Dane train?

i was before he was main stream. i remember watching him on comedy central on his FIRST 10 minute set during that show in the 90's when they had 3 comics on in 30 minutes... the one where he did the joke about the bathroom stall, and kicking the door in.

then i saw his 1 hour special. "my name is on the drum!!!" one. i knew he was going to be huge after that. when his popularity rose, i couldn't stand the people hopping on and saying they loved him without knowing his previous work.

and now, just over-hyped. ike barinholtz impersonates him perfectly, because i see that his routine has NEVER changed. some of the jokes have, but i can't really stand him anymore.

TheLittleDeviant
02-19-2010, 08:24 AM
I was around for the original works from DC, I think I have seen all of his acts, except for the most recent one. I like his comic style. makes me laugh, I enjoy that he takes everyday things, or experiences that we all have had and makes them funny. just my 2 cents...

what type of paint is the best paint to use when you paint the engine cover?

TheLittleDeviant
03-14-2010, 10:06 PM
The paint itself doesn't really matter much. What's important is the prep work and proper dry times, that alone can take days when your layering multiple colors on it. I personally use krylon or rustoleum paints because they are the most convenient to get. 24 hour walmart ftw!

TheLittleDeviant
04-09-2010, 02:08 PM
Well unfortunately, Monicas cover got pushed back a few days... the paint wasnt fully dry when it got cleared and ended up blending/running with the clear... so I already stripped it and laid down a new base coat, I'll be working on it all day tomorrow and then clearing it again monday or tuesday of next week, then hopefully have it shipped out by wednesday so she gets it by Friday...

Cylon_xD
04-09-2010, 07:19 PM
So Ted, have any of your painted covers been tested on a engine in daily use? Or is it too hot under the hood to keep the artwork there for an extended period? I plan on keeping my cover off the car except for display at shows - I'm afraid the heat will discolor the paint or make it peel or something nasty. Perhaps I'm being overly cautious, but...

Anyway, I was at the dealer about three weeks ago, getting my State inspection/emissions test, and I checked with the parts department - a brand new cover for an xD only costs a little over $70, so I'll probably buy one eventually to put on the car for daily driving...

Cylon_xD
04-10-2010, 04:43 PM
I just got back from the first car show of the season for me, Ted, they really liked your engine cover artwork! Lots of people were taking pictures of the cover. I posted up a few pics over in the "2010 Car Shows" thread in the General Discussion forum...

TheLittleDeviant
04-10-2010, 09:53 PM
I recommend not keeping it on for daily use. I'm glad everyone liked the work. Any trophies?

Cylon_xD
04-11-2010, 11:26 AM
no, I don't really have a chance winning any trophies at those kind of shows - too many dedicated "Show Cars" there to compete against - you know, the kind they put 30 Grand into and trailer in to the shows... :disgust:

x2cafn8dx

Cylon_xD
04-12-2010, 08:22 AM
That's why I prefer the Scion-only shows - except then usually you don't have ENOUGH competition there - if youre not the only xD, maybe there's one other if your lucky, or if they group the xA and xD together in one division, you may have one more car to compete against... it's no fun winning a trophy for being the only car in your class now, is it? :emotions36:

I think my most best-est feat was winning Best in Show last summer at an all-Scion show in Allentown, PA, I was the only xD there so I was competing against 18-20 tCs and xBs that were all done up pretty nice, and I still beat all of them out - Hooray for the lowly xD!

I agree on the not enough competition, but one of my pet peeves is when different models are classed together... xB1's and xB2's, and xA's and xD's... drives me bonkers... although the xB's not as much, only cause both Gens at least have the same name... :laughing1:

Cylon_xD
04-12-2010, 09:03 AM
My biggest pet-peeve occurred at another small Scion show I went to last year, only about 13 cars were there, but someone trailered-in one of those so-called "show cars," an xB with mega mods on it - the Dealer had about 8 cash prize awards they were giving out, like best theme, best paint, best interior, etc, and the show car won like six of them, the dude got something like $400-$500 dollars... that suxed for the rest of us with daily driver cars... ah well.

WIP on my friends tC:
http://i901.photobucket.com/albums/ac216/DT9Designs/Work%20in%20Progress/IMG_0897.jpg

So I am thinking about doing my stock hood and putting it up for sale. I have wanted to do a hood design for a while, so I think I am going to go nuts on it and just see how it comes out...

Any interest?

Thank you guys, its still needs a lot more artwork on it. The owner has a full sleeve tattoo that I am replicating on the covers, the ship and anchor that you see is a duplicate of his arm. I still need to add 2 birds with a banner between them, a light house, and then some random things like the Kool-Aide Man, and the Zebra from fruit stripe bubble gum.

TheLittleDeviant

No airbrushing, all of it is hand drawn using paint pens and sharpies.

As some of you know I had my car in the Scion booth at the Ocean City Car Show. This is one of the pictures carshowcoverage.com took of my car.. love that they focused on Ted's work.

Man, that's some sweet work you're doing out there. Keep it up. I wish I had the ability/patience to get some of the things I see in my head out into the world. I envy guys like you.

K. Hackett... Hmmm..... = Can't hack it? Or am I being to creative. :)

Keith Hackett, he is actually in the military and its verbatum to his Camo's. Its also his Gamertag on xbox live.

But I do like the Can't Hack it line... especially for him, The Xbox is suppose to resemble the Armor worn in Halo. (I was thinking of painting my xbox with the same scheme except in red, so we are Red Vs. Blue) And he is one of the best Halo players I have ever come across. He used to play in tournaments and would net about $2000/month

Now I feel a little bad about accidentally disrespecting one of our countries finest. Can't say enough about what the people who put on the uniform (be it military, police, fire, emt, whatever and put themselves in harms way) do for the rest of us schlubs. With out them we'd be up a creek. Tell him thanks for me. And I hope I never meet up with him in a game sometime. :)

LOL, I didnt take it as disrespect to him, In fact I think he will get a kick out of the Cant Hack It line.

SSSOOOOOOOOOOOOO....

DT9 Designs, has a new trick up its sleeve... 08+ Scion xD Cubby Panel Covers!!!!!!

They are one of a kind pieces and are all hand crafted in-house. We are in final development now and will be releasing 4 covers as a series that will be labeled as covers 1 of 4, 2 of 4, etc. We arent 100% on price yet, but expect around $40 to $50 for the piece and artwork together.
