Yeah, the manual is wrong - set the Odometer to Trip A instead of ODO, and do the same procedure. I just had to do mine this morning! Just press and hold the odo button in while turning the key to ON (don't start the engine). Maint Req light will flash about 10 times, then go out, then let go of the odo button... done!
BTW, welcome to SXDF!

Hi,
Actually, this wasn't the reason I just registered (I'll ask that elsewhere) but does this work for a 2009, as well?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice!

Same for an '09:
Set odometer for "Trip A", turn off key, hold trip reset button, turn key to ACC (accessories), then wait while it counts down (about 5 seconds).

i just put 5000 miles on my 2011. my maintenance light came on. caught me by surprise. when i called the dealer he said it was for my tire rotation. apparently that light will come on every 5000 miles to let you know about tire rotation. i need to do the reset trick to get my light to go off.

Bull. Your tech is full of it. The maintence required comes on to remind you to change the oil NOT THAT YOU NEED A TIRE ROTATION. You have your oil changed and then have the light reset.

yea, i figured they were full of bull. they were the ones that also told me that the TRD springs were a 2" drop. lol. but yea, he told me the 5k light was for tire rotation and that my oil change wasn't due til 10k miles

lol an oil change every 10,000 mile. Tell that to Toyota if the engine gets damaged due to not changing the oil.
5,000 is most I would go on a newer engine that is taken care of. Older engines and low maintained engines 3,000 is the norm. if drive in very hot or dirty areas constantly I would change more around 3,000.
Glad you know he is full of it. I should work for Toyota lol.

i was told every 10,000 miles because it is running synthetic oil. i know it sounds naive, but i've never driven a car with synthetic oil. im used to 3000 mile oil changes. i am taking his word on 10k for synthetic in these cars

I drive synthetic oil and i change mine every 10k. I'm actually due for a change today or tomorrow. I've had this car for just over a year and at 10k its running great.

How does the oil look after 10K miles?
This is mostly me being old school. but I would still change every 5K maybe 7.5K miles on synthetic if possible.
I know oil has changed a bit in recent years, but I just don't trust going 10K on an oil changed. Besides oil may handle it but what about the filter? most filters are not going to last 10K miles.

That is Toyota's recommendation. My father drives a 2010 Tundra with the 5.7i and changes his oil every 10K and has had the oil sent off to blackstone labs and everything came back within spec.

The oil deffidently looks dirty just like it should. I had a 96' Tacoma v6 before I had this car. I changed its oil every 5k for the first year I had it and another 10k rest of the time and I didnt notice any differance.

Well then based on what both of you said I retract my previous statements. If that is the case then 10 should be ok.
Not that I am going to do it personally but good to know that I don't have to worry if I don't change it for a while.
