Thanks for your site! I really enjoyed reading up on it. Have you done many mods to the engine or do you keep it simple to stay in a specific class? Engine bay pic would be sweet. I saw where it said you were having fluid consumption problems. What insight do you have on this. Last, did you convert the rear to disk brakes or did you keep it drum?

Rally xD
02-20-2011, 06:47 PM
Only "performance mods," Performance filter, headers, exhaust. So far we've kept the mods to a min to help avoid additional headaches. We are still learning a lot about rally racing and the major wear and tear the car has to go through. We are exploring making more power but reliability and serviceability is always our main goal and don't want to threaten that. I'll get more detailed photos on the site soon. Fluid problems... on one of the night stages, one of the cars had a major accident forcing all the cars to wait until it was cleared off a safe. Due to this wait, our car consumed more fuel then we anticipated and we ended up "running" our of fuel close to the stage finish and ended up having to get towed back in! That and a blown tire on stage really made it tough but we were able to battle back and make up a lot of time to still take 2nd in our 2wd class. We have not changed out the drums...but are considering changing that as well.

Rally xD

Other than the front and rear Tein suspension, we used the TRD rear sway bar and made a front tower bar. Hopefully you can see it from this image.

I really like my Nitto rear lower strut tower brace I got from Miroimage. It's made for the Yaris and fits our car. The problem for you guys though is probably ground clearance. I know if an animal ran out in front of me I could probably strattel it, but it would get a hellatious clothes line from the brace. I can feel a difference in turn in with it though!

There was a lot of coverage and we are compiling it all as we speak. We plan to post up a video of our event coverage in the next week or two. The video portion was late to start b/c the truck/trailer/team with the video equipment got stuck in the crazy winter storm in the mid-west as they were traveling back from Sno*Drift. I'll post up a link once the video is up. You'll be able to see it on the team site and youtube.

Rally xD
03-14-2011, 09:51 AM
Our hood isn't a dry carbon hood...just your standard one from them. We should've asked for one! We just put the xD on the dyno at the Greddy facility and we produced 119 horsepower to the wheels with only the TRD filter, bolt on headers and cat back exhaust. Not bad. We're going to be developing the engine i think.

Its quick for what it is especially for 119hp. I run mines a few times and even surprise myself that I won. The lack of aftermarket support is still whack. Im hoping to finish paying my car off by the end of the year. Then debate to motor swap or get another car most likely back to my turbo volvos lol

Rally xD
03-24-2011, 09:18 AM
Right now due to the rush and lack of time, the kit is being made custom. There is talk in make a production version if enough interest comes from it. Right now word is that the turbo will be "de-tuned" heavily w/ restrictors to keep the power down and allow the turbo and piggy back ecu system to work w/o any problems with the bone stock engine/pistons/etc. On rally race stages, the xD needs just a little push to get out of the slower turns to get back up to speed. Also keeping the turbo restricted will help to keep the heat and stress low keep serviceability and reliability high. We'll see..will update again soon.

If "you" wanted a kit...how much horsepower would you ideally want?

Whack-A-Mole
03-24-2011, 11:14 AM
I would like around 200hp though 250hp would be sweet! Or 8psi of their fastest spool!

Whack-A-Mole
03-25-2011, 06:40 AM
What can we do to show interest?

Rally xD
03-26-2011, 12:34 PM
Thats understandable. i know the team choose to go with a much smaller turbo. We'll see. The team asked Greddy for 35-50 horsepower and they said "thats it!" The first stage of adapting the turbo without any further engine development is the goal right now. The extra power is needed to help the xD get out of the turns better.

Whack-A-Mole
03-26-2011, 04:51 PM
I'll enjoy following you guy's blog. Thanks for keeping an ear to the ground. So you guys are running about 4-6 psi?

xd_kidd
03-26-2011, 05:29 PM
yea ii wld love to see what potentials a 2zr-fe gots but its understandable. Im also guessing too much boost power could cause a bit less traction on the course.

Rally xD
03-28-2011, 11:09 AM
Potentially, Greddy is saying 100-150 but then we'll have to start building the engine...clutch....etc. We're taking it slow and steady. We hit the dyno later today or tomorrow so we'll get some more numbers soon.

After our kit is finished, we're going to see what exactly it'll take to get a production kit for all of the xD fans/owners out there. More info to come.

What can we do to show interest?

Their has been interest since the xD was released but people tend to back out once real world cost are understood. Any serious power would be require internal upgrades and beefing up of the transmission. It is possible to see an 6K-8Kprice tag when it is all said and done and once you reach that price point then other sports car become available that would be better options.

Whack-A-Mole
03-30-2011, 05:30 AM
I'm familiar with all that, but I think 200 hp (total) would be safely realized with a good tune. I was wanting to know what Greddy was wanting to see. I like my car for what it is, but a little more pep would go a long way! Thank you Rally XD for keeping us up on the info, and keep up the good works!

Rally xD

First dyno session went without any problems. We obviously didn't push it and wanted to make sure everything was working correctly. We got 40+ horsepower, 45+ lbs of torque at 4 psi. We'll post the first dyno sheet shortly on the site. More dyno/tuning to coming.

Rally xD
04-04-2011, 09:16 AM
So we had our first dyno session and so far so good. We still have our engine in place and everything is working. We haven't developed any of the engine's internals and are hoping to just get a little more power out of those slow dirt/snow/mud turns on the stages.

On this first session we were only at 4 psi. We got about 50+ horses and lbs of torque. I believe Greddy installed a restrictor to keep everything down as a precaution. Stayed tuned.

@ CXTKRS1 it does pay to be objective. Think posative man! I am really pumped for this. Definitely something we are all wondering about. The E-manage is set at 2 different setting, one at 4 psi, the other at 6 psi. The dual settings will allow the driver some options during the stages. We hope to have some testing sessions soon prior to the next race event.

Fill us in on that new clutch! Aftermarket parts are hard to find, and I went to ACT's website (probably not up to date) and they didn't have a kit readily available. So the fact you found one is awesome! It's obviously performance oriented, but what all does it include? Is it lighter, just more friction, does it include a lighter flywheel, and does the part coincide for another vehicle and fit our car as well? Religiously watching, all bow down before the mighty Rally XD!

I like it! It's a nice long flat power band. Dude, I swear you hate your car. Why don't you sell it, and quit you glum remarks? There's tons of other vehicles that might impress upon on you, but this one doesn't seem to be for you. I can go around and crap on (ad nauseum) other cars, but I don't. The main reason I don't is because I know a car can be a personal thing, and people choose their cars depending on what they like. So it's always going to be an opinionated decision, and I respect/understand that. So to sum up I guess, just don't be a dick, dude.

The reality of what the xD is can't be changed but on the flip side, there are a lot of surprising options out there to really enhance the car's performance. It's a great looking, functionally capable vehicle with just a few add on (bolts-on) accessories can greatly enhance the driving experience. We're going to compile a list of parts, where to buy, from whom on all of the stuff we've researched out on our xD. In the end...we're actually racing and we're holding our own which has really been a great experience.

We race this weekend and are busy with tuning/prep. So bare with us on this weekend's posts on the team site: rallyxd.com

see i like the numbers on this graph and they clearly display a stock curve and a modified curve. this is the 3rd time ive posted about this, and i've contacted rally xd. i just need a graph to go by.

K&N graph shows numbers from a stock XD.
Greddy's graph shows very similar numbers but the XD is modded.

conditions have an affect on things but it shouldnt be a big enough affect where a modded XD has less HP and TRQ than a stock XD.

Quick Update: Saturday's race we finished 4th in class. We had to deal with major damage to the car's exterior and internals and were pretty much running the race at 60% capacity/speed. Will post up a picture soon once i get it. Pretty much our exhaust pipe was hit by rocks to a point it was practically pinched and blocked significant air flow creating extreme build up = down pipe came off = heat released and melted ecu wiring = car went hay wire. The event ended up being a 1 day event due to an accident on one of the stages that lead to a death of a driver.

On Sunday, we entered in a Regional rally event since we were out there after staying up all night Saturday getting the car repaired. Our repairs were good enough to put us in the lead most of the day but the band aid couldn't hold up and the ECU pretty much said that was enough. We were towed by in = DNF.

Videos and images to hit the team site this week. We tested at the Dirtfish facility on Thursday and the car was hauling.

Check out this picture of our exhaust pipe. This is the "elbow" portion going around the fuel tank to the exhaust can. Definitely not what you want when you have a turbo feeding extra heat and air.

Actually....the damage to the pipe wasn't from bottoming out. it's from impact from rocks underneath. There was so much impact and serious impact that it pinched the pipe closed and event pulled the exhaust down/off forcing the down pipe to get disconnected. Thats what lead to major issues on the car...all the heat was released in the worst area and our ecu pretty much got fried.

We'll be releases videos and pics on the team site soon. Will share some teasers here when i get them.

well rally did say he found a compatable lsd and clutch. im pretty sure if they wouldve tranny swapped it wouldve been one of the first things posted on the rallyxd site. Just like certain suspension parts from the yaris are compatable with ours its almost certain there are other toyotas with compatible parts (ex. 2009 rav4 uses same front brake system as the XD) there for rotors and pads are interchangable. its all a matter of lookin for the application list of certain parts and most aftermarket sites dont offer that option (just to make more money off a multi application part)

My inquiries to the engineers say that yes we are running the C50. Whats crazy is that the C50 code is shared amongst not only our xD, but also the corolla (AE92), MR2 Turbo, Celica MR2 Spyder, and toyota/lexus E350. So what we learned was that the "c50" code was clearly not enough info to find out compatibility. The Quaife unit we used and is compatible is the celica mr2 spyder unit.

i'll email quaife and let you know if it works on the A/T.

ACT is still getting back to me on specs on the clutch units.

Yes those are the ones that ACT have that will work. The costs...i believe are MSRP but you should check with your local dealer/shop just in case.

does the clutch upgrade improve for us with light mods? always thought it was to handle cars with more torque.

Btw did ever gotten a weight comparison from the oem hood/hatch with the c.f ones?

---------- Post added at 09:20 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:49 AM ----------

Another question the metal cover under your car did you ever felt a difference before and after you had that installed? Aerodynamic wise?

Another question (srry for the harassment lol) which lsd worked for you the best? Nd what's the part numbers? Lol

- We never really measured the difference. the reality, the savings was small but give that we really needed all the help we could get, we had to do it.
- the metal cover/skid plate under the car really weighed us down but is critical to rally racing. we could've gone a lot faster but probably wouldn't have been able to finish.
- the KAAZ LSD worked best for us. Its a "true" lsd and gave the driver better feel and response. Let me get the part number for you.

i see on your blog you guys use 5w-30 synthetic motul oil. is there any benefit using that grade as oppose to the recomended graded? can i use it on a stock motor or should i just stick to 5w-20 synthetic?

Rally xD
07-25-2011, 09:38 AM
The fluids that we are using right now is what our engineers with motul recommend now that we are running a turbo system on the xD. If your engine is still relatively stock, using the recommended is always a safe bet. A key factor is always your environment, depending on where you live and the weather conditions can also influence what you should use.

07-26-2011, 06:33 PM
The Rally America season is done for now but we are considering doing some Canadian events. As for next year, we are looking to do a combination of Rally American and Rally Cross events. What do you think?

Whack-A-Mole

I think that's a tall cup of awesome sauce! How was your new setup doing for you? New pistons probably more boost!?

Rally xD
07-28-2011, 07:22 PM
The new set-up allowed us to increase the horsepower to 200 to the wheels. We were not able to push it as much as we wanted to so we believe that there is a lot more potential for us to increase power. We kept the boost still relatively conservative..i think we were at 7-8 lbs of boost.

Awesome news! So the weak link was the hollow pistons?

We experienced a small leak in our down pipe. The heat leaking out really didn't help since our ecu and clutch cables were melted together. We're happy we even crossed the finish line.

Just read your article in Dsport, and it was awesome as well as insightful. So you guys were running 6.5 psi with TC injectors and bosch fuel pump on 91 octane making 165.1hp and 183.4 torque. Man that car is a torque monster! Also saw your dyno chart and saw the noticeable bump of power from the dual VVT-I was a little more subtle. Keep up the great works guys.

Rally xD
08-08-2011, 11:07 AM
We're pushing 200hp now but we haven't really "fine tuned" the engine yet but the power definitely helped us in New England.

08-11-2011, 10:37 AM
Just curious....how many serious buyers would want a turbo set-up for their xD? If there are more than 5...i think GReddy is considering making an off the shelf set-up. Please reply. Of course price is always a factor but like any other turbo upgrade, the costs will be similar. is there an ideal price range?

Whack-A-Mole
08-11-2011, 04:46 PM
That would be really cool. I guess the price would depend on the power output. I'm guessing their 6.5psi setup would be around 4k? Also, this timing stings a little. Just spent 1k for exhaust that will not work for turbo setups.

I'm in. But of course it will take me a lil while to save up the coin.

YELOSUB
08-13-2011, 01:32 AM
Is say keep it around 3k...Turbo set ups for the tC and the xB2 can be purchased for right around that price...It would have to plug and play...

XDevolution
08-13-2011, 11:48 AM
when the turbo kit came out for the rally xd originally you guys were running 4 psi. that allowed for use of stock internals without worry about damage. for that ide take a 5 psi kit and im saying for everything 3k sounds good. no more than 4k. and what would the kit include?

interested yes. Can I throwdown money for a promise to buy/groupbuy unfortunately not. It would probably be a year or two.

If it works with stock internals or has every needed and plug and play pretuned stand alone or something I would say $4k tops unless coming with major internals then a little more obviously.

If it needs to be tuned at all I would say stay around $3k mark.
