Thats real debateable. I tried the DIY intake and I didnt like it. Felt like I lost some tq. I now have an Injen cai and its great. Running strong for awhile now. Others swear by the DIY intake. Injen claims 8 hp added I think but idk about all that. Im getting a dyno done tomorrow so ill see where I am with my mods.

KylexD 01-13-2012 08:08 PM

I was waiting for that, lmao!!! The way I see it, and this could be close minded, but i have a DIY intake that was on the car when i bought it (spectre) and i dont see where its doing much at all for me. I figure if your spending like 50-60 or less on something like that...how much can you expect it to do?!?! But i will say this...the Injen CAI in BLACK is so sexy that may decide for me from color alone, haha. BUT....I DO WANT TO HEAR A FEW OPINIONS...FOR EXAMPLE IM SURE PEPS ON HERE RUN DIFF. CAI, or SHORT RAMS, ETC. I WANT TO KNOW THE GAINS IN PERFORMANCE PEPS ARE SEEING. And do let me know the results of that dyno.

ThisorThatxD 01-13-2012 10:19 PM

can do. oh and if i remember right, the black one had issues with the maf sensor not fitting properly. they cut it right, but the paint made the hole a bit too small. i went polished for that reason and had no fitment issues. others just had to sand the paint off around the hole. just a fyi.

Could you paint the polished one urself? lol

ThisorThatxD 01-14-2012 05:46 AM

dont see why not. im actually curious how your engine bay painting goes lol. ive wanted to do something like that for awhile now but havent gotten courageous enough. if anything i wanted my engine cover done.

KylexD 01-14-2012 12:06 PM

Well im gonna think about the possibility of painting a CAI. I guess nobody else has an opinion on there intakes, lol. And yeah dude, im painting that shit!!! Im gonna order some primer and low gloss black soon, i may do some painting today, but prolly just my badges cause whoever had it before me put some shitty paint on them, so i gotta sand and repaint.

1sweetxd 01-14-2012 12:30 PM

making my own intake today! we'll see how it goes. have a buddy giving me a hand so it shouldnt be too bad. i'll have pics up this week.

FYI...i also got some new Toyota badges. should get them on also! its the little things that make a big difference

Nice! Yeah make sure to post pics. Of badges aswell.

I like the K&N cause it comes with a splash guard, and thats nice to have. I like the Takeda because you can go CAI or Short Ram. And does anyone know what the electronically tune means on the AEM?

i think the k&n was too much for what it was. never had a issue with water on my CAI so id imagine the short ram would be easily guarded. for the AEM, youll see the diameter is all the same. on my injen, the diameter where the maf sensor is seated is smaller, so it wont throw codes. im guessing AEM just electronically alters it.

KylexD 01-15-2012 10:06 PM

You have some pictures of yours?

ThisorThatxD 01-15-2012 10:20 PM

sure do.

I like what im seeing and hearing about that injen. I think that may be my route. What came of the dyno?

ThisorThatxD 01-15-2012 11:13 PM

its a good intake. i cut a piece out of the grille cover on that side to get more air to it. once i get the new grille that wont matter. mesh ftw.

my buddy has the dyno graph which i will post once i have it. i was around 125 whp 126 tq. this was my first dyno experience. i went with a group of 3 mini's. they said the dyno was reading low for us all (called it the heart-breaker lol). id hope so since those are stock numbers. unless stock numbers are at the crank and not wheel.

this is the intake me and a buddy got accomplished this weekend. a trip autozone and advanced auto parts and we had everything here. total around $50-$60 including tax wasn't bad. had it done in about an hour.

just starting taking the scion emblems off. should have the toyota emblems on in a day or two.

i have two pics here, one with and one without the engine cover.

KylexD 01-16-2012 01:05 PM

Nice, looks good. Does it feel any different?

thanks! actually yes i do. my exhaust is def a little louder. actually have had a couple people say my car sounds almost like a v6 or v8. lol. i'll take the compliment. as far as performance goes, i noticed a little extra pep from a stop and even on highway speeds.

and its really cool to be able to hear the air getting sucked in as you accelerate. almost gives off a slight whistle at high rpms. i dig it!!

haven't driven enough to notice any mpg gains. that was my main reason for doing it. the appearance and maybe an extra 1-2 mpgs

KylexD 01-16-2012 02:49 PM

Nice, that whistle is sweet too. I cant wait to upgrade mine. BTW yall check out this site, ive never seen so much xd shit in one place. Everything is sold on ebay too, the site links you right there when you click on an item. http://www.sciontrd.com/

ThisorThatxD 01-17-2012 03:30 PM

kinda nice. i prefer to search on my own through ebay but its good to see what all is there in general.

also, the whistle is always nice.reminds me just how much extra air is getting in there.

KylexD 01-31-2012 12:54 PM

Is the Injen really not for the 2010 xD???!!!!

ThisorThatxD 01-31-2012 01:13 PM

as far as i know they are all the same. maybe send a quick email to injen or a authorized dealer to be 100% but yea.

KylexD 01-31-2012 02:08 PM

Ok, thanks.

Pittshark 02-01-2012 01:08 PM

Chris, I like the Injen intake. What's the deal with that Hydroshield on the filter? Looks like a nice little thing to have just in case.

I went a slightly more moderately priced route with the DC Sports CAI. All in all I like it and the install was super easy. Here's a couple pics:

ThisorThatxD 02-01-2012 04:03 PM

thanks. the hydro-shield was free with the purchase so it was more of an added bonus lol. ive seen water drops on it so it does what it needs to.

i cant remember how much i payed but i know i had a bunch of coupons and stuff from autoanything.com so i just got it from them. i need to get in there and clean it cause right now its full of spots hah.

1sweetxd 02-01-2012 05:58 PM

well, i've had my DIY intake on for a couple weeks now. i also took a pretty big road trip last weekend and it looks like ive picked up a couple MPG's with the set up. im feeling a lil bit more pep since ive done the intake and im up on my MPGs from 32 to a lil more than 34!

KylexD 02-01-2012 06:18 PM

Nice, thats awesome. Does anyone know the best places to buy wheels and tires?

depends what you want. for tires i use http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/home.do?

for wheels that i just bought i used http://www.vrwheels.com/ . you can also look at http://www.tunershop.com/ for more options

KylexD 02-02-2012 12:59 PM

Sweet, I found like 10-12 wheels to choose from. I talked to Injen, the R&D guy told me they have not confirmed their CAI will work on the 2010 :(

so weird. i swear its the same but id hate for you to buy it and then it doesnt fit right. any other options?

KylexD 02-02-2012 04:53 PM

Not for me. lol I WANT the Injen. Fortunately I did talk to the peps from fastscions and THEY have tested the Injen on the 2010, and it is the same!!! :party33:

ThisorThatxD 02-02-2012 06:30 PM

haha nice. glad that got sorted

KylexD 02-02-2012 07:19 PM

Oh yeah, that will be my first performance mod.

nlmotoring.com for rims

tirerack.com for tires

Then head on over to discount tire and have them mount and balance...

Another vote for next level, I know several people who have purchased rims through them with zero issues.

KylexD 02-03-2012 11:34 AM

Sweet, I will check that out.

Anyone running with a cold air inatke? What do you guys think about that?

---------- Post added at 06:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:50 PM ----------

Whats the diference between a short ram intake and a cold air intake?

XDevolution 09-13-2012 09:22 PM

I have a custom short ram similar to the hps intake. The difference is the cold air set ups run into the fender and usually the filters sit behind the bumper. Short ram intake sit visable in the engine bay, easier to install, and are better for low to mid range power gains. Cold air intakes due to the longer intake tract offer higher gains because of colder denser air but gains are not felt til higher in the rpm range.

Resolve 09-14-2012 07:54 AM

as stated^

Short ram filter normally in engine bay and has a short straight or fairly straight tube

Cold air has longer tubing with more bends. and filter is outside of engine bay normally in wheel well getting the cooler air. The other difference is price and maybe a couple of ponies.

xd_kidd 09-14-2012 03:49 PM

about another 2-3 ponies for another 20-50 bucks worth of tubes... then some time to remove front bumper and back on... to some be worth it and for some.. well i dont think it will make a dif. really

I took the factory air intake off last night and installed this DIY intake filter. It cost about $30 total for the Spectre Filter from Autozone and the 5/16" threaded stud with washers and nuts I bought from home depot. It tool longer to go get the parts than it did to put it on. Very simple. I haven't had a chance to do any driving with it yet other than a couple of blocks to work. I'm only hoping that maybe it will gain a couple of MPGs.

steve see the intake you made, thats how i started with a spectre filter and stock intake tract. if you really want a more noticable difference, the filter should ve been either a knn or like a aem dryflow. and see that rubber pipe with that awkward pole coming out of it right after the maf? you could actually replace it with a 22 degree bend pipe from autozone (located with all the intake parts) it not only looks more official it actually smooths out the airflow because there are no ridges in the pipe. just a suggestion.
