What grade octane should I use?

Hi, I have a 2011 scion xD RS3 and just wondering if I should use regular or premium. I'm only asking this cause I notice the comp. ration on the 2zr-fe is 10.0 which seems pretty high for a engine that uses regular gas. Just want to hear xD owners opinions on this. Oh and can anyone give me some pointers on increasing mpg for my scion, like changing to a trd/k&n filter.

Thanks,
Hue

I use standard. I tried premium but I dont notice enough difference to spend the extra cash.

I always used premium since my last car was turbo ii had to but yea i felt with premium on a full take. the box seems more preppy and ready to go lol. but maybe its just me lol. but yea everyone uses different grade and even with regular some people say its not bad..

Yeah, because my old gsr with a 10.1 comp ratio requires premium only.

Your GSR was also an older engine. 87 octane is all that is needed in the xD, anything else you are not seeing any gains and just wasting money.

Also since the higher octane is a more controlled burn (resist preignition and detonation), your car is designed for regular, so it may not burn all the gas completely. A guy on Scionlife used high octane before he rebuilt his motor his piston heads were caked. I believe his name was Wesley scion.

this is what i was gonna say,

link to the thread

to quote him:
"[I run] Premium, Mobil. They have carbon build up because I'm using Premium fuel, 97 octane is not recommended for the xD, the motor is not designed to handle that high of an octane, the engine simply can't burn the fuel, my motor is proof of that. Oddly enough, I never noticed a power loss, and it never ran poorly."

what premium will do to ya:

simmons0613 05-18-2011 09:32 PM

^^^^^ agreed. i log my gas milage and i get the best using 89. i used 93 and my mpg's were at the all time low of 21.5. never will i go that high again. my average: 87 octane: 26.5 mpgs. 89 octane: 27.9 mpgs. Its really whatever you have the money for. go with 87 but use a fuel injector cleaner prior to filling up. i notice a real big difference then. at that point im getting like 32 city mpgs. routine car maintinance helps too. tire pressure check, oil change every 4500 (my preference) , intake filter cleaning, fuel injector cleaner once every 2 months (my preference)

if you really see it that way then you'll stop giving your car premium, when regular is the best for that engine.

your car is your baby and you're clogging its arteries with premium.

That reminds me of taking a kid to mcdonalds. You want to make them happy by giving them tasty food (for those of you who say its tasty:signs16:) but know how bad it is for them.

xd_kidd 05-19-2011 09:08 AM

gotta give him whats best. what about mid grade? I still have 80% tank to go.. waiting till ii get nearly to swap out..

simmons0613 05-19-2011 09:37 AM

I dont know. I would just stick with regular.

THEHMONGYAJ87 05-19-2011 01:58 PM

wow that looks pretty bad. looks worse than my gsr motor when I cracked it open at 170k miles... no premium for this xD then.... Thanks
