Interesting... I never thought about it, but my old Mercedes had foam pipe insulation around the liquid AC lines. After 20 years and 400,000+ miles, the foam had deteriorated and fallen off. I replaced it just to make it look better. Not sure if it helped... But then again, that car was designed for r12, and that stuff had gotten really expensive, so I had it charged up with r290, which is just propane. Propane gets a little cold than r12, so my AC kicked butt regardless.
