This just came up. On top of Consumers Reports saying:

"The most reliable vehicle, Toyota's Scion xD small wagon, experiences around one-fifth of the problems of the average car."

2009 APEAL Study Results
Subcompact Car Segment

The 2009 Smart Fortwo is the most appealing subcompact car according to the results of the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 APEAL Study, ranking ahead of the No. 2-ranked 2009 Scion xD and the No. 3-ranked 2009 Honda Fit, in its first year of inclusion in the study. Last year, the previous-generation Honda Fit was the highest-ranked subcompact car

The 2009 APEAL Study provides information gathered from over 80,000 purchasers and lessees of 2009 model-year vehicles. Overall model performance is measured on a 1,000-point scale. A higher score indicates better performance and a lower score indicates worse performance. The 2009 study covers a total of 90 vehicle attributes, and organizes them into the following 10 categories:

* Exterior
* Driving Dynamics
* Interior
* Visibility/Driving Safety
* Engine/Transmission
* HVAC, or Climate Controls
* Storage and Space
* Audio/Entertainment/Navigation
* Seats
* Fuel Economy

"In Edmunds.com's Consumer Ratings and Reviews, owners are invited to write and submit reviews of their recently purchased vehicles and provide satisfaction ratings in eight important categories. Once a year we tally the results from these ratings to see which cars and trucks most satisfied our visitors. The 2009 Edmunds.com Consumers' Top Rated Awards features 19 categories, covering the automotive spectrum from Sedan Under $15,000 to SUV Over $45,000.

Sedans
Sedan Under $15,000: Scion xD

Style isn't something you'd ordinarily look for in the humble economy sedan segment, but the Scion xD isn't an ordinary vehicle. Its youthful, energetic sheet metal pulls off quite a feat: It's distinctive without being the least bit polarizing. Of course, there's more to this car than meets the eye. Motivated by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine good for 128 hp and 125 pound-feet of torque, it boasts a trio of attributes that are golden to shoppers in this segment: decent power, pleasant highway manners and outstanding fuel economy. With dealer-installed extras that include a rear spoiler, LED taillights and interior mood lighting in a choice of four hues, the xD also offers myriad opportunities for customization. The car was designed to appeal to younger buyers, but given how much this sedan has to offer, it should come as no surprise to learn that buyers of all ages have joined the party. This Scion isn't perfect — it has less cargo space and front legroom than some competitors. Overall, though, the xD is an excellent choice for buyers seeking an economy car that transcends blandness."

From Forbes.com

In Depth: Cheapest Cars To Drive

To compile our list of the cheapest cars to drive, we used data provided by Vincentric, an automotive data provider and consultancy based in Bingham Falls, Mich. The data lists the five-year costs of insurance, repairs, maintenance, interest and fuel for 2009 vehicles sold in the U.S., assuming the owner drives 15,000 miles per year with fuel at $2.50 per gallon. We did not consider the vehicles' suggested retail prices, depreciation or taxes in our assessment, as those costs are associated with the initial purchase and maintenance of a vehicle, not with the act of driving it.

Topping our list are the Toyota Yaris, Nissan Versa and Scion xD,

No. 3: Scion xD

Total Cost to Drive for Five Years: $17,942

Insurance: $6,386
Repairs: $680
Maintenance: $2,079
Fuel: $6,250
Interest on Payments: $2,547
Combined Fuel Efficiency: 30 mpg

MSRP: $15,320

is it just crazy that the xB rates so bad? isn't the xB2 EVERYTHING potential xB buyers wanted but couldn't get in the xB1? yet, ou hardly see an xD where I live. there's a few, but just occasional. xA's were non-existent in Chicago till last year when the gas prices spiked. Everywhere now.

Well, "worst" is only relative, here - the window of ranking for the Scions is very high, and you're talking about only 3 models. So the xB placed 3rd out of 3 models that all ranked very high in reliability... in this case, "worst" really doesn't mean anything negative...

Exactly, the worst Scion is the xB, which is still higher than all the other manufacterers... LOL

Default Poor review

Toyota is disputing the test methods of safety organization Euro NCAP after the Urban Cruiser was given a disappointing three-star rating.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser was particularly criticized by Euro NCAP for its Adult Occupant Protection capabilities, for which it scored just 58 per cent.

However, Toyota is disputing Euro NCAP's test methods. A spokesman said, "Toyota gives priority to building cars that are as safe as possible.

"In 2009, we received a five-star rating for all three new cars that were evaluated by Euro NCAP (iQ, Avensis and Prius).

We are currently investigating the Euro NCAP result in detail, in order to understand why there is a difference between our Toyota assessment and Euro NCAP's rating.

"Together with other car makers, we are also discussing with Euro NCAP certain aspects of their evaluation methodology, which might also explain why the rating is lower than we expected.

"The three-star rating for the Urban Cruiser has been triggered by the "pole side impact" test. During this assessment, the dummy head area deceleration slightly exceeded the demand value of Euro NCAP.

"There is a difference of opinion between us and Euro NCAP on a technical matter, namely peak acceleration of the head area in the Pole Side Impact test.

"Our in-house tests, which are designed to meet the highest safety requirements, indicated that the protection provided by the head curtain airbag would be in line with a five-star Euro NCAP rating.

"Once again, we remain fully convinced that Urban Cruiser is a safe car."

"The most problem-free cars and trucks are made by Honda and Toyota, but U.S. automakers Ford and General Motors are closing the gap in quality, according to an annual survey by Consumer Reports magazine...

For the third year in a row, Toyota's Scion had the fewest problems of any brand in the survey...

Scion, Toyota's youth brand, was tops because it sells just three models, the xD hatchback, xB wagon and tC coupe. Those models haven't been revamped recently. As a result, they have fewer reliability problems, said David Champion, senior director of auto testing for Consumer Reports"

Default Hoonerverse review
"This site is in no small way dedicated to an unfounded appreciation of the unloved cars of yesteryear. Darts, The Falcons, Pintos, Datsuns, Ramblers and wagons of all kinds that we regard with such esteem were blazing badges of uncoolness in their day. Typically underpowered and undersized, they made names for themselves by defying their assigned stigma to deliver more speed, handling, reliability or utility than expected. Nothing demonstrates coolness through ambivalence like shamelessly rocking a car from the bottom of the automotive food chain. Genuine coolness can come from embracing one’s true nature and reaping the rewards therein; just look at the dorky kid who built a cyborg in his basement, .

The Scion xD has all the makings of a future anti-cool alternative classic. It’s the bottom-rung model from a value/youth oriented brand and packs a decent 128hp into its subcompact package. Though, when our tester arrived kitted out with a TRD exhaust, suspension and 18″ wheels, we had to wonder is this xD cool, or just trying to be cool? . . . . ."

The xD is best of the best again!
Consumer Reports released the results of its annual car reliability survey today, and Scion came out as the top brand, with the fewest reported problems.

Scion cars proved the most reliable, according to owners contributing their experiences in the latest survey by Consumer Reports used to predict car reliability. The report, released today, compiles survey results for 28 brands. The least reliable cars, according to the survey, bear the Jaguar badge.

Along the Scion range, the xD scored the best, while the xB model was the worst, although all were well above most other brands. Lexus, another brand from Toyota, grabbed the No. 2 spot, and its CT200h model proved the most reliable, even more so than the Scion xD. Toyota-branded cars showed up at No. 6 in the survey

The xD is a good vehicle but Toyota needs to spend some money on upgrades soon or it will start to fall behind the competition.
