Default 2008 Scion XD suspension rattle & steering play/knocking Diagnosis=Rack/Pinion=FALSE
If you are experiencing unusual steering play with slight knocking when you slightly turn steering wheel left/right even when vehicle is turned off.
And when you are driving you hear rattle coming from the steering column every time you go over any small bumps.

Then the problem you are experiencing is most likely steering Intermediate shaft yolk bolt is loose.

SEE ATTACHED PRINT_SCREEN ON RESOLUTION STEPS

The dealer replaced the bolt for $115 dollars & problem resolved.

NOTE: several mechanics diagnosed this problem as RACK/PINION.
